How To Buy The Right Size Bike For Your Kid

Summer, at least according to the calendar, is in full swing. Cycling is a great activity for your kids to learn and there’s something about getting your first bike.

Maybe it’s your child’s first bike or maybe you’re looking to upgrade as they grow. Either way, we’ll help you pick the best bike for your kids.

If you’re buying a kids bike online, how do you know what size to get?

Choosing the right bike size is crucial for their comfort, safety, and overall enjoyment. We understand that navigating kids' bike sizing can be a bit confusing. But don't worry! We're here to make it super simple. Let's dive into how to determine the perfect bike size for your child.

How Are Kids’ Bikes Measured?

Kids' bikes are typically measured by the diameter of their wheels, unlike adult bikes, which are sized by their frame. Common sizes for children’s bikes include 12", 16", 20" and 24". The right size generally corresponds to the child's age and height, but there are a few more factors to consider.

So, if you come into the shop and say, “I want to buy a bike for my kid.” And if your kid is with you, this is what we’ll do. We’ll pick a bike and put the saddle all the way down and ask your kid to take a seat. Here's a brief guide to some of the steps we go through:

  1. Saddle should be as low as it can go.
  2. Legs straight, no bend in the knee. If their knees are bent it can cause developmental hip issues.
  3. Your kid should be standing on the ball of their foot, not on their tippy toes.
  4. Testing the bike on the ball of their foot means you can wait before having to buy a bigger bike.

If your child is on their tippy toes, the bike might be a little too big. But if the bike is for some time in the near future like an upcoming birthday or Christmas, the way kids can grow they should be ok by then.

How Does Kids' Bike Sizing Work?

Understanding kids' bike sizing involves more than just looking at the wheel diameter. Here’s a quick breakdown of what you need to know:

Age Range:

While height and inseam are more precise, age can give you a general idea of where to start. For instance:

12" bikes are usually suitable for kids aged 2-4 years:

Balance Bikes:

Balance Bikes are the ideal way to your children cycling. At about 2 years old they can wobble along pushing a small balance bike and begin to learn the skills needed to control a bicycle. You’ll find LittleBig and Dawes balance bikes with us. LittleBig bikes are Irish owned and assembled in Ireland.

Our LittleBig Balance bikes are a innovative Irish made product which starts life as a Balance Bike, then when they are ready the pedals are bolted on, making it a pedal bike. Not only are the pedals bolted on but the size is adjusted to grow with them.  This means its like 3 bikes in one as they can do children from 2-6 years old!

As their little legs grow they will soon be pushing off down the pavement and you'll need to run to keep up with them!

And that reminds us, have your heard of our Growth Spurt Guarantee?

So many people tell us they worry about buying a bike for your child, only for them to grow out of it in the blink of an eye. To try and put an end to kids getting bikes too big so they can "grow into it" or struggling on with a bike that is far too small we have come up with the Growth Spurt Guarantee. If you return the bike within 2 years you will get up to 60% of the purchase price guaranteed against the next bike. We do have some terms and conditions for this though to keep things fair and you can read them here.

14 - 20" bikes work well for 4-8 years:

Once they’ve mastered a balance bike it’s on to the next level. For these bikes your child’s height is a good indicator of the best bike for them. It can be tricky getting the size right for this age as they all grow at different rates. On our Kids bike section, you can search for bikes by height. For an approximate size guide:

12" wheel = 2-3 yrs old

14" Wheel = 3-4 yrs old

16" Wheel = 5-6 years old

20" Wheel = 6-8 years old

20+" bikes are ideal for 8+ years:

Youth bikes can be anything from the age of 8+, again depending on their height. If you’re buying online and can’t make it to the store, we recommend using each brand’s size guide.
